Essential requirements

Employment must be at a University, or a University affiliated college which offers undergraduate degrees. In Australia, a Research Associate or Research Fellow is a professional academic, who has completed a PhD, and undertaken Post-Doctoral study. A Research Fellow or Research Associate should demonstrate that they have undertaken independent academic research which contributes to their field of expertise. 

Applicants must be able to provide evidence of their academic research, which may include verifiable evidence of published articles in peer-reviewed journals.

Academic research should be:

  • A scholarly/scientific investigation that arrives at the discovery of facts/a conclusion
  • Including an academic standard bibliography (including peer-reviewed journals and not generic sources)
  • Published by university press or professional organisations
  • May be presented at conferences to research peers or professionals in the field of
    research.

Teaching duties alone, such as the preparation and presentation of lectures, will not meet the skill level for positive assessment.

You must have Competent or proficient English (eg: minimum IELTS 7.0 in each band or equivalent PTE etc) with 3 to 8 years work experience.

Requirements for VETASSESS Skills Assessment

University Lecturer is a Group A Occupation.

This occupation requires a qualification which is assessed as comparable to the educational level of an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Bachelor or higher*, in a field highly relevant to the nominated occupation.

Applicants must also have at least one year of highly relevant, post-qualification employment, at an appropriate skill level completed in the last five years.

If the qualification(s) are not at the required educational level, and not in a highly relevant field of study, or if the employment has been completed prior to the qualification, then the applicant will be assessed below the required skill level.

*This includes qualifications assessed at AQF Bachelor, Master and Doctoral level qualifications.

A positive assessment of both qualifications and employment is required for a positive Skills Assessment Outcome.

Job description

A University Lecturer, lectures students and conducts tutorials in one or more subjects within a prescribed course of study at a university. They are also required to conduct research in a particular field of knowledge.

This position may also be suitable for a Research Associate or Research Fellow in a University.

UNIVERSITY LECTURERS AND TUTORS prepare and deliver lectures and conduct tutorials in one or more subjects within a prescribed course of study at a university and conduct research in a particular field of knowledge.

Most occupations in this unit group have a level of skill commensurate with a bachelor degree or higher qualification. In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 1).
Registration or licensing may be required.

Tasks Include:

      • preparing and delivering lectures, and conducting tutorials, seminars and laboratory sessions
      • preparing and marking essays, assignments and examinations
      • advising students on academic and related matters
      • attending departmental and faculty meetings, conferences and seminars
      • supervising work programs of postgraduate and honours students and tutorial staff
      • participating in setting course and degree requirements, curriculum revision and academic planning
      • serving on council, senate, faculty and other committees and professorial boards
      • conducting research and undertaking consultancies in a particular field of knowledge
      • stimulating and guiding class discussions
      • compiling bibliographies of specialised materials for reading assignments
