Dinesh Weerakkody brings 26 years of an unusual combination of dual credentials: he is both a longstanding senior Australian legal practitioner and an accomplished legal academic. He also has the unique ability, gained through his experience, to practise across several complementary areas of law, including estate planning, migration law, family law, criminal law, and litigation. Throughout his career, Dinesh has worked in, and held partnership roles within, both large national law firms and smaller legal practices. This breadth of legal and academic experience is further strengthened by his established leadership within the wider community.

Your matter will be personally supervised by Dinesh, who will oversee its strategy and review and settle key legal work.

Dinesh prefers to assist clients directly with an ethical and human touch; as such, he is settled in as the Principal Lawyer of a boutique firm, DLegal Barristers & Solicitors. Drawing on more than 26 years of professional experience, he assists individuals, families and businesses with clear, practical and strategically considered legal advice.

His contributions to legal education include teaching law at Deakin University, serving as an Adjunct Lecturer at The College of Law, and working as a Lecturer and Unit Convenor at Swinburne University Law School. At Swinburne, he contributed to the development of the initial evidence law curriculum and tutorials and taught both the theoretical principles and practical application of evidence law.

Dinesh was admitted to Deakin University in the year 2000, completed the Bachelor of Laws and a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice, and is admitted to practise in the Supreme Court of Victoria. He began his legal career in property law and later established the migration law practice at Oates Rennick Lawyers before founding DLegal.

Dinesh understands that seeking legal assistance can sometimes feel complicated, stressful or uncertain. His approach is to listen carefully, identify what matters most to the client, explain the available options in plain language and develop a practical strategy suited to the client’s circumstances and objectives. He combines careful preparation with an understanding of the personal, financial and practical considerations that may affect each matter.

Dinesh serves as President of LawHelp Australia, President of the Buddhist Council of Victoria and Deputy President of the St Margaret’s Berwick Grammar School Council. He is also a member of the Law Institute of Victoria’s Migration Law Committee and previously served as Treasurer of the Eastern Suburbs Law Association of the Law Institute of Victoria.

Dinesh is also the producer of the LawHelp television program broadcast on Channel 31, through which he helps make legal information more understandable and accessible to the wider community.

He has extensive experience assisting clients from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. His understanding of different cultural perspectives enables him to communicate sensitively and develop a clear appreciation of each client’s individual circumstances.
