Why does the candidate need training?

Part 61 of the Civil Aviation Safety Regulations (CASR) sets out the requirements and standards for the issue of flight crew licences, ratings, and other authorisations. The rules cover what flight crew needs to do to obtain and maintain licences, ratings, and endorsements/ratings, and the limitations that apply to exercising their privileges.

All training for the grant of a Part 61 licence, rating, or endorsement must be conducted by the holder of a CASR Part 141 or Part 142 certificate.

All Pilots must hold Australian CASR Part 61 Flight Crew Licence qualifications.

All Pilots will be required to undertake the prerequisite training to meet the CASA Part 61 Flight Crew Licensing requirements and proficiency standards at a minimum.

  1. The candidate (all candidates) irrespective of their experience, are required to obtain training specific to the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Regulation (CASR) Part 61 Licencing Qualifications, without which, the trainees could not qualify for a CASR 61 Flight Crew Licence, and therefore not operate an Australian VH-registered aircraft.
  2. The candidate is required to obtain an Airbus H135 Helionix Type Rating (endorsement of this helicopter class/type) on his Pilot’s Licence, so therefore the candidate is required to conduct this training regardless of his/her experience. This helicopter type rating must be completed under the Auriga Aviation (Heli-Aust Whitsundays) CASR 141 Approved Training Organisation (ATO) [CASA.141 FTO.0246].
  3. Other examples, flying in Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC), or operating using Night Vision Goggles (NVG) requires specialty training, ultimately necessitating a test for competency of either Instrument Proficiency Check (IPC) or a Night Vision Proficiency Check (NPC), which can only be conducted by appropriately qualified Flight Examiner. The training for both these operational ratings can only be conducted under the Auriga Aviation CASR 141 Approved Training Organisation (ATO).
  4. Australian licencing outcomes cannot be achieved, by simply applying for a CPL overseas conversion (helicopter) exam COSH, or conducting an individual exam, such as a Human Factors/Non-Technical Skills (CHUF).
