There are many visa pathways for Nurses under their relevant occupations to immigrate to Australia. If you are an internationally qualified nurse or midwife (IQNM) you need to apply for and be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) registered through AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) and possibly obtain a skills assessment from ANMAC. The most commonly used nursing specialisation when applying for migration to Australia is the occupation of Registered Nurse NEC (Not Elsewhere Classified). This occupation is on the Skilled Occupations List and is usually the most straightforward nursing specialisation to apply for skills assessment. These processes are entirely separate, and success in one does not automatically guarantee success in the other.

There are levels of Nurses in Australia:

  1. REGISTERED or FIRST-LEVEL NURSES are licensed to practise nursing in the field/s in which they are registered without supervision and assume accountability and responsibility for their own actions. These nurses are also referred to as ‘professional nurses’. Registered nurses direct and guide enrolled nurses and are primarily responsible for providing nursing care.
  2. An ENROLLED provides nursing care within the limits specified by education and the regulatory authority’s license to practice. The enrolled nurseworks under the direction and supervision of the registered nurse.
  3. DIRECTORS OF NURSING administer the nursing activities in hospitals or other health agencies directly or through other managers and supervisors.

Bachelor-level qualifications from the following countries are likely to be recognised by AHPRA: Belgium, Canada, Chile, Hong Kong, Ireland, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Singapore UK and the USA.

If your qualification is not recognised, you may need to undertake a bridging course in Australia to convert your qualification to the Australian equivalent.

English language proficiency Employer-Sponsored Visa (below Apply for jobs with sponsorship)

The applicant can demonstrate achievement of the required minimum scores in ONE of the following English language tests – no other types of English language tests are accepted.  You need to provide ANMAC with your English language test number and the test date so that we can verify your test results online.

  • ANMAC accepts test results that are up to two years old.
  • Scores from two different tests cannot be combined.

01. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic test.  Employer-Sponsored Visa (below Apply for jobs with sponsorship)

  • Applicants must achieve a minimum score of 7 in each of the four components – listening, reading, writing and speaking.
  • ANMAC only accepts test results from one test sitting OR a maximum of two test sittings, in a six-month period only if the applicant achieves:
    1. a minimum overall score of 7 in each sitting
      AND
    2. no score in any component of the test is below 6.5.

02. Occupational English Test (OET) for Nurses. Employer-Sponsored Visa (below Apply for jobs with sponsorship)

  • Applicants must achieve a minimum score of B in each of the four components – listening, reading, writing and speaking.
  • ANMAC only accept test results from one test sitting OR a maximum of two test sittings, in a six-month period only if the applicant:
    1. is tested in all four components in each sitting
      AND
    2. no score in any component of the test is below C.

03. Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic. Employer-Sponsored Visa (below Apply for jobs with sponsorship)

  • Applicants must achieve a minimum overall score of 65 and a minimum score of 65 in each of the four communicative skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking.
  • ANMAC only accept test results from one test sitting OR a maximum of two test sittings, in a six-month period only if the applicant achieves:
    1. a minimum overall score of 65 in each sitting
      AND
    2. no score in any of the four communicative skills is below 58.

04. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) iBT. Employer-Sponsored Visa (below Apply for jobs with sponsorship)

  • Applicants must achieve a minimum total score of 94 and the following minimum score in each section of the test – 24 listening, 24 reading, 27 writing, 23 speaking
  • ANMAC only accept test results from one test sitting, OR a maximum of two test sittings in a six-month period only if the applicant achieves:
    1. a minimum total score of 94 in each sitting
      AND
    2. no score in any of the sections is below – 20 listening, 19 reading, 24 writing, 20 speaking.
